Being Different makes you Special

Maybe you’ve felt different for your whole life, or maybe it’s something that you’ve just started feeling recently. Regardless of how long it’s been, it can be difficult at times to deal with being different.

It’s easy to blame our problems on our differences. But don’t let that get you down. In fact, there are many great things about being different if you just look closely. So, here’s a list of 25 reasons for you to be thankful for your differences!

25 Reasons To Celebrate Being Different

1. Great Role Models

One of the greatest perks of being different is realizing that many famous artists, musicians, scientists, or even entrepreneurs have peculiarities of their own. Despite this (or perhaps because of this), they’re now an inspiration to millions. Pick up a biography or memoir of someone you admire to deepen a connection with your role models.

2. Possessing Courage To Carve Your Own Path

When you’re different from others, you tend to things on your own more. While it’s frustrating at times, this teaches you how to take initiative on your own. You’re more likely to do what’s important to you even if no one else joins you.

3. A New Way Of Thinking

Having different hobbies and interests than most people can lead to many new ways of thinking. If you’re worried about fitting in and pleasing the crowd, you’re more likely to accept the way things are instead of trying something new. Being different allows you the freedom to experiment with your thoughts.

4. Being True To Yourself

The independence that being different brings also encourages us to stay true to who we actually are. Find your passions and interests and embrace them, stop trying to hide who you are! If you’re trying hard to fit in but find it forced, then it’s time you start believing in yourself. Being true to yourself is essential for happiness and fulfillment in life.

5. Meeting Interesting People

Many of our deepest connections are forged because we meet others who are also outsiders. In being different, you’re more likely to seek social interactions outside of your immediate communities. This increases your chances of running into many interesting people. Be sure to take time to appreciate the people in your life and their interests!

6. Tolerating Differences in others

If you feel like you’re a little bit strange and don’t fit in, then you’re more likely to sympathize with someone who feels the same. By accepting other people, they’re more likely to accept you. This allows us to feel a kinship with other black sheep and we’re more tolerant of differences because of our experience. Diversity is a wonderful thing, and it’s important to value others with their quirks as well!

7. Inspiring Other People

When we’re true to ourselves and live our lives in the way consistent with our values—even if that means going against the grain more often then not—other people take notice. Even if you’re unaware of how some people see you, chances are that someone who’s come in contact with you has been touched by your words or actions.

8. Your Unique Gifts

No matter how different you are, you’ve definitely got at least one unique gift and probably many more. Talent, skills, interests, personality, physical attributes can all be sources of our uniqueness. When something makes you different, it also makes you special. It’s not what you’ve got, but how you use it!

9. Learning Perseverance

Doing things because you want to and enjoy it is a great way to learn perseverance. When things are hard, or even when no one else is doing it, you stick to what you love because you love it. The motivation to do things for yourself is a great skill to develop that will take you far!

10. Wonderful Opportunities In The Future

The fact is, if everyone in the world thought alike then we’d be missing out on some of the greatest entertainers, artists, musicians, poets, scientists, engineers, and architects in the world today. While it may not feel like it now, being different can end up serving you with so many future opportunities you never even dreamed of today!

11. Standing Out

Sometimes we’d rather not be noticed for being different, but standing out makes you memorable. You make an impression on others, so make it count. Show off your best side and don’t be embarrassed. Self-confidence is sexy, so believe in yourself and embrace your difference.

12. Pushing the Envelope

Pushing boundaries is necessary for change and adaptation. However, to do this you need to have a bit of courage, some motivation, and a reason for doing it. That means if you’re fine with how things are, you’re not one leading the charge. Being different sets you apart so you’re more likely to act when something needs to change.

I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.

13. Being A Teacher For Others

Whether by example or if you’re able to share thoughts and experiences, you’re teaching others about differences. While it may be irritating at times, you have no idea how your interactions will influence other’s thoughts and opinions, now or in the future. By taking the time to share yourself, you’re helping others learn more about the world and other people.

14. Spicing Up The World

Imagine eating oatmeal for the rest of your life. Or what if could only wear a white t-shirt and blue jeans. Think about how dull our lives would be. You’re making the world a more interesting place by virtue of just being yourself! So thank you for being different and adding your own special variety to the world.

15. Fulfilling A Need No One Else Can Fill

While we can’t be good at everything, there is something you can do that no one else can. Likewise, there’s a need out there in the world that only you can fill. It may take the form of friendship or becoming a great inventor. There are so many possibilities, so pay attention to your life. Find what it is you’re good at that no one else can do, and find ways to make it meaningful to you and those around you.

16. Bring A Different Perspective To The Table

It’s easy to assume everyone sees the way you do, but even eyesight and color perception varies from person to person. So your experiences of being different allow you to see problems and solutions in ways that others don’t. Galileo and Einstein brought drastic changes to the world through their creative approaches. Your perspective brings another idea and voice into the world.

17. You're Not Restricted By The Status Quo

If you’re worried about what everyone else thinks and wants to please them, you’ll just do what’s popular and easy. Conformity holds back progress. That means those who’re unsatisfied with how things are now, those willing to go against what everyone else is doing, are the ones who help influence change.

18. Enjoying Your Own Company

If you feel that a lot of time others just don’t get you, then luckily the person who gets you most is always with you. Being different can cause people to spend time doing their own thing. This translates into you really getting to know yourself. Even extroverts need to spend quality time with alone to discover themselves. This brings clarity to your life which is necessary to figure out what you want to do and how to get there. So take some time alone and enjoy your wonderful personality. (BTW, It’s okay to laugh at your own jokes!)

19. Innovative Ideas

Diversity of thought leads to innovation. Innovation brings change. And change isn’t always easy, and there’s usually a lot of resistance. We need many people with different ideas so that we can have a better future. But innovative thinking isn’t possible unless you’re willing and able to try something different.

20. Contributing To A Fascinating World

The world is made up of humans, plants, animals, fungi, elements, molecules and so many other amazing things. Luckily, you’re among them! The whole system works together, and even small, seemingly insignificant organisms can have a huge effect on the world around them. Just by existing, you’re helping to create this beautiful world!

21. There's a 'you' shaped place in the world

All the impressions and connections you’ve made until now, all the relationships with friends and family and lovers couldn’t have existed without you. It’s easy to overlook our significance at times, but because you exist, you’ve played an important and valuable part in so many people’s lives—and you have your entire future to go!

22. Connecting Thoughts And Experiences No One Else Can See

All experiences in your life, good and bad, have value. They’ve helped shape the person you are today. How you act today shapes who you’ll be tomorrow. Your perspective, knowledge, and experiences are all unique to your life alone. That means the insights you have are something no one else can reach to in the same manner. How you reach a place is sometimes more important than actually getting there, because you’re able to bring a unique story with you.

23. Changing Social Norms

Ever thought about how trends start? One or two people have an idea, they start doing it. Soon a few catch on and copy it, as it spreads it becomes more popular and everyone seems to be doing it. Change always starts like that. It starts with a few people who branch out, build up momentum, which leads to a widely accepted change. It’s not necessarily easy or fast, but it’s inevitable. By being different, you’re helping to bring change to social norms.

24. We Need All The Colors To Make A Rainbow

The reason a brightly colored object in a field catches our attention is because of contrast. Being different is contrasting with the world around you. A rainbow is white light is split by wavelength. We perceive this as beauty. Your differences add contrast to the world, while at the same time being an essential ingredient.

25. You’re The Only One Who Can Be You!

Arguably the best reason to celebrate: you’re the only you in this entire world! There are around 7.8 billion people, and out of all of them, you’re unique. That’s a pretty astounding number to grasp. For instance, if you decided to count out loud to 7.8 billion, it would take roughly 741.78 years to do it. So while you’re lucky to meet people who are similar to you, keep in mind that no one out there can take your place.
