Having the right tools is important if you want a better art space for your home. Here’s a list of 6 additions if you either want to upgrade your existing art space, or if you’ve finally decided to start a new one.

It’s an exciting step forward on your journey, so having the right tools to help you organize and get started will go a long way on your art journey. This list is for those on a budget who want to get the best value for their dollar.

If you can only buy one thing on this list, I would say go with the light goes the furthest for making a better art space. As a visual artist, having good lighting is so important.

Lighting influences how we perceive color and shape so it goes a long way when it comes to art. Making sure that you have ample, bright light while you’re working allows you to create your best work.

Pros

This versatile architect lamp is a wonder! Minimalist and sturdy, it has 3 hinge joints for maximum flexibility. It’s easy to position the light over different areas of your art space. Since it’s clamped to the table, you never have to worry about space. The lamp has two silicone clips to firmly grip your table without damaging it.

The base of the lamp rotates 360 degrees without loosening the clamp. Twist it anywhere or even use it on an inclined surface like a drafting table. The head swivels 180 degrees so you can point the light in the right direction (and out of your eyes). The brightness and color are adjustable for whatever mood lighting you need. When you turn the lamp on, it remembers the last settings.

As an LED lamp, it’s energy-efficient and doesn’t get hot with prolonged use. The head of the lamp is nearly 16” long—so there’s plenty of light for your art space! The light has a 50,000 hour life—so they’d burn out after about 5.7 years of constant use. For the cost, this is a great buy since you won’t need to replace it anytime soon.

Cons

There are only two buttons located close to the base and take a little getting used to. By pressing the power button it switches the lamp on or off. If you hold the power button, it causes the brightness to change. The second button changes the light from warm to cool. While the lamp doesn’t include a remote, it does work with smart plugs which are a good workaround.

Another drawback is that the cord plugs into the lamp at a 90 degree angle. Meaning, the back of the lamp needs a few inches of space from the wall. Luckily, the cord is plenty long. At 71” you can clamp the lamp any side of the table without worrying if it’ll reach the plug.

Overall, this lamp is a great buy for a better art space. No more weird shadows interfering with the intricate details. Have flexibility with your lighting so you can work at any time of day.

The most flexible option for artists is a drafting table. It’s a fantastic addition for a better art space because it takes care of your need for an easel and a table.

This versatile surface is best suited to fit your artistic needs, and the drafting table by ZENY is a highly customizable table so you can make it just how you want.

Pros

If you’re upgrading your art space then a drafting table is a fantastic addition. A mix between an easel and a table, this versatile surface will fit your artistic needs.

You can use the drafting table flat or tilt to up to 60 degrees. So it’s great for a variety of projects like drawing, collage, or painting. If you watercolor, you can even tape your paintings on the glass. The flexibility to work horizontally or vertically means you don’t have to worry about a skewed perspective.

As far as tables go, glass is a convenient and elegant choice. It’s easy to clean, for one, but my favorite reason is that glass surfaces are great for tracing! Just put a bright light underneath, and you have a light table. There’s a minimal-to-no extra cost for such a helpful tool.

The drafting table is large enough for most projects. It comes with wheels so you can easily move it around your house. There’s also a protective floor-attachment for the legs to protect if you’d rather not have wheels. The desk includes storage space for pencils, erasers, paintbrushes, and other supplies.

Cons

The desk requires assembly. This leaves many customization options though. If you want more legroom, you can leave off the drawers attachment or even attach them to the side.

The metal lip that holds pencils and paper is optional as well. This is a good option if you plan to set the table flat and work on it often since the lip can get in the way.

Plastic trays on the edge are a little on the shallow side, but they’re good for holding quite a few supplies. Or, if you don’t like them, you can take one or both off.

ZENY drafting table falls into the sweet spot when it comes to function, price, and design. With so many customizable options, you’re able to fit the table to your needs for a better art space. Especially if you’re looking for your first drafting table, this is a great buy.

Organizing art should be simple and convenient so you can have a clean art space. Especially if your work is looseleaf paper, it’s important to keep your art safe from stains and spills.

With 7 different sizes, you can pick the portfolio that suits your works and needs best.

Pros

The Itoya portfolios are a snazzy solution. No need to worry about bending or losing your works. The portfolio has 24-plastic sleeves so you can show off up to 48 separate works. It’s great for storing a variety of media including inks, graphite, watercolor, and toner.

With this sleek portfolio, it’s easy to organize your work. These portfolios protect from moisture and are perfect for archiving artwork. Add your own label with the spine insert so you always know what’s inside.

Cons

While this portfolio is great for longterm storage, it’s a little difficult if you need to frequently take your artworks out of the portfolio. To remove the art, you have to slide it out of the plastic sleeve. These sleeves are a tight fit, with little space for oversized work. If your art is slightly larger than the listed dimensions, you may have to trim it down unless you opt for a size up.

Despite this, the Itoya portfolio is a wonderful choice due to the organization, convenience and protection it affords your art. This addition will make your art space better—no more losing your work, misplacing it or accidentally messing it up.

A train case is a great place to keep your art supplies for daily use, portability, or longterm storage. It’s the perfect way to organize your paint and ink with plenty of room at the bottom for larger items. For a better art space, it’s helpful to keep everything together and easy to find.

With four fold-out trays, so you can easily spot what you need, you can find the right supplies without hassle. Arrange your supplies neatly, and rest assured that they’ll stay in place without rolling around and getting jumbled up.

At 3.8 lbs, it’s on the heavy side but that’s the tradeoff for a sturdy aluminum case. No more worrying about breaks or spills since. Conveniently keep everything together in the same place. The case locks for security and comes with two keys. No children or pets will get into your toxic or dangerous supplies.

It looks great and has a solid handle so you can bring a wonderful variety of art supplies wherever you go!

This hexagonal organizer is a fantastic choice for pens, pencils, or paintbrushes. With 7 different compartments, it’s shaped to maximize the use of space and can hold over 350 pencils.

Beautifully designed from organic bamboo, it’s eco-friendly and durable. The organizer spins 360 degrees, so you can find the right tools. The underside has silicone pads to prevent slipping.

Convenient and simple, it’s the perfect addition to keep your supplies all in one place.

Surfaces are one thing you can never have too much of when it comes to making art. So you make sure you have an abundance so you can have the best art space possible.

These shelves are a great solution for maximizing your surface area. The shelves adjust without needing tools, so you can easily fit art projects of different heights. The wire meshing and open sides allow airflow if you need to use it as a drying rack.

Coming in at 23.2 x 13.4 x 30 inches, it’s a good size for most projects and comes in two colors.

Made of steel, it’s sturdy and you don’t have to worry about heavy art projects. Each shelf can hold weights up to 250 lbs. With the adjustable feet levelers, you don’t have to worry about stability or rocking either. The wide surfaces are suited to hold wide canvases or paper.

For the price, it’s a convenient solution if you need more space.
